I learned how to surf as a junior high student in 1965, at the foot of Law Street, and fondly remember the cheap but tasty Sunday Omletts, Wednesday night spaghetti and Friday taquitos from the back window. In later years, in early '70s, Tugs Tavern at corner of Emerald & Mission Ave continued Maynard's tradition with the spaghetti, taquitos and Sunday breakfast. I vividly remember the plywood they'd place over the pool tables, then an oil cloth over that as a tablecloth, and empty Gallo Spinada bottles for their Green Goddess salad dresing. Pitchers of beer were only 75 cents, too!

My husband and I moved to PB in 1967 and spent a lot of time in Maynards. Do you have t-shirts? If so, please let me know.

Thanks, Marlene

Sorrento Mac Meda Convention
The sorrento valley convention was Jan 10 .... my birthday. We had around 16 cases of Red Mountain Rose. The girls used them as seats.. Our "Afternoon Delight" was two quarts Squirt to one gallon of wine, coarsely blended in an open keg (add dry ice and limes)...... If anyone ends up caring about the recipe.
We wound up with about 85 gallons. It should have been closer to 98 gallons but some went up in the air.
It was too good......... someone has a picture of Eric Carpenter who can be seen shooting bird across the radiator of my '53 Chevy Flatbead.
I am fairly certain everyone got absolutely and completely ripped.....a blackout. Everyone told me that it was delightful.... A kind soul politely drove the truck back to Jacks.
A few days later, Richard Barber(at that time the principal of La jolla High) had a colorfull lot to say about "Misfits and Juvenile Delinquents" in the la jolla light.
Jack would be in absolute stiches when he brought that story up. He would always finish. saying that my dad "never had a clue".

Doug M: "Rose Canyon Chimmney falls in storm"

I hadn't seen anything about this in any of the Mac Meda posts or info and wondered if anyone could lend more details... I'm a bit sketchy with some of the recall.

Rakestraw had a line on a Finnish anti-tank gun and was in the process of buying it until he had to come up with the $280.00 cash(for gun and 8 rounds). The bullets for this thing were $10.00 ea. and were about the size of a tall coke bottle. The reloads were cheaper at $4.00 ea. He always "knew a guy" who could get him 'Anything'.
Anyhow January, 1962 and birthday money..... he bought the gun and I and donated twice for the reloads. Bob got Armor piercing and then the cheaper lead 'dum-dums'...... he had good techincal advice for this project. Good thing we got the dum-dums.(they finally brought it down).
It was a rainy, windy Saturday night with no one but the dogs in the yard. He tried the old armor piercing first. They seemed to go right through or miss after three shots. He changed to the dum-dums and that second shot at the base sent it slowly over...... a LOT of bricks and the earth shock came across the canyon.
No one but the Meda insiders knew about it. It was written up in a long article in the paper as "Sorm Damage" which began the final epitath for 'Rose Canyon Brick Yard'.
Maybe others can lend some details to this and the twist of Mac Meda humor it deserves. I always thought it could be properly commemorated with a "Before and After"--- front and back tee shirt. When I brought it up now and then he just smiled, rolled his eyes and said "TOO HOT".

One summer morning when there was no shore break I concocted the First Annual Pump House Breakfast. A bunch of us dressed up in white shirts and ties to look respectable -- which worked until you realized everybody was barefoot -- and brought hurricane hibachis and a bunch of eggs & potatoes and we set up a kitchen on top of the pump house. We actually made a killer meal that morning -- it was real early and we were all hungry.

But someone yelled "Who's bringing the vodka?" and a neighbor must have called the cops because they came from both directions, slowly, stopped and got out of the patrol cars, and I swear the officers looked at all of us, looked at each other and one of them said "Sarge, if I didn't see it I wouldn't believe it."

We made TV news that night; wonder if that clip is sitting on a shelf somewhere.

I did it all in a hopeless attempt to impress Tracy Gary.

Jill Wagoner--
I remember Frank Hetzel as a good friend at La Jolla Hi. He and I used to "hang" at Wind`n`Sea & La Jolla Shores. I lost contact with him when I joined the Coast Guard right after high school. I heard he worked at Scripps Institute as a diver. He was a great guy.
